Das Schloss befindet sich an der Stelle der mittelalterlichen Burg Kærsgård. Diese ließ König Christian IV. teilweise abbrechen, als er von 1639 bis 1644 für seinen Sohn Valdemar Christian aus seiner zweiten Ehe mit Kirsten Munk das Schloss erbauen ließ. Die Reste der Burg wurden in das neue Gebäudes integriert. Das Schloss wurde im klassischen Renaissance-Stil erbaut.
