Der Staudamm von Riaño befindet sich im Osten der Provinz León, in der autonomen Gemeinschaft Kastilien und León, Spanien. Er gehört zum Einzugsgebiet des Duero und wird vom Fluss Esla gespeist.
Die Schleusen des Stausees Riaño wurden am 31. Dezember 1987 geschlossen, und es gab keine offizielle Eröffnung. Obwohl der Bau 1965 begann, erklärt sich die Verzögerung beim Befüllen durch eine Ansammlung sozialer und politischer Umstände, die im Laufe der Jahre zu Protesten gegen den Abschluss der Arbeiten und den Beginn des Füllens des Damms führten. Die Proteste nahmen zu, mit massiven Demonstrationen. Infolgedessen kam es zu polizeilichen Räumungsaktionen gegen die zwanghafte Räumung der Bewohner der betroffenen Gemeinden.
