Clermont-Ferrand ist der Hauptort des französischen Départements Puy-de-Dôme in der Region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes und mit 147.865 Einwohnern dessen größte Stadt. Die Präfektur verwaltet auch das Arrondissement Clermont-Ferrand; es besteht aus 25 Kantonen.Clermont-Ferrand liegt im Zentrum Frankreichs etwa 425 Kilometer südlich von Paris bzw. etwa 170 Kilometer westlich von Lyon im Talbecken des Flusses Allier , der etwa zehn Kilometer östlich an der Stadt vorbeifließt. Die Stadt wird überragt vom Puy de Dôme, einem hohen erloschenen Vulkan des Zentralmassivs, der dem Département seinen Namen gab. Clermont-Ferrand liegt am Flüsschen Tiretaine.
