Bis zu seinem Tod unter der Guillotine 1793 war das Schloss seines Geburtsortes im Besitz des Louis Marie Florent de Lomont d'Haraucourt, duc du Châtelet.
Semur-en-Auxois liegt im Zentrum der Region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, im Westen des Départements Côte-d'Or. Der Fluss Armançon fließt durch die Ortschaft. Sie war Drehort der Komödie Fisch oder Fleisch mit Louis de Funès aus dem Jahr 1958.
