Bugarach trat Ende 2012 stark in den Fokus. Dies lag an der Vorhersage, dass das Dorf während des angekündigten Weltuntergangs am 21. Dezember 2012 (das Ende des Maya-Kalenders) verschont bleiben würde. Die „Gläubigen“ glaubten, dass sich am 21. Dezember der Berg Pic de Bugarach öffnen würde und von dort UFOs herauskommen würden, um die Menschheit rund um das Dorf zu retten.
