Die Alpilles sind eine Kalksteinkette im Südwesten der Provence zwischen Avignon, Cavaillon und Arles. Ihre Ausdehnung beträgt in West-Ost-Richtung etwa 30 und in Nord-Süd-Richtung etwa 10 Kilometer, sie erreichen Höhenlagen von 300 bis 500 Meter. Die Region um die Alpilles umfasst eine Fläche von etwa 500 Quadratkilometern. Die höchste Erhebung ist die Tour des Opies . Die stark zerklüfteten Gebirgsstöcke zeichnen sich hell gegen den blauen, besonders bei Mistral sehr klaren Himmel ab, so dass der flüchtige Eindruck schneebedeckter Gipfel entstehen kann.
