Napoleon III. beschloss, diesen imposanten Felsen als Ankerpunkt für den Damm des Port du Refuge zu verwenden, den er anlegen wollte.
Daher wurde der Felsen durch eine Holzbrücke mit dem Land verbunden (die durch einen Metallsteg ersetzt wurde, der Gustave Eiffel zugeschrieben wird) und durch einen Tunnel wie den Atalaye durchbohrt, um die Steinblöcke für den Bau des Damms heranschaffen zu können. Seinen heutigen Namen verdankt der Felsen der Jungfrauenstatue, die 1865 auf seinem Gipfel errichtet wurde.
