Napoleón III decidió utilizar esta imponente roca como punto de anclaje del dique del Puerto del Refugio que quería crear.
Por ello, esta roca estaba unida a la tierra por un puente de madera (sustituido por una pasarela metálica atribuida a Gustave Eiffel) y atravesada por un túnel como el de Atalaye, para permitir la entrada de los bloques de piedra destinados a la construcción del dique. Esta roca debe su nombre actual a la estatua de la Virgen María erigida en su cima en 1865.
