Der 1914 begonnene Bau dieses Denkmals sollte ursprünglich die reiche Geschichte der Stadt Soissons würdigen. Der tragische Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts entschied jedoch anders: Bei seiner Fertigstellung 1926 wurde es zum Kriegerdenkmal, auf dem eine Widmung zu lesen ist: "A Soissons immortelle à ses enfants tombés glorieusement pour la Patrie" (Dem unsterblichen Soissons und seinen glorreich für das Vaterland gefallenen Kindern). Die Statuen des Denkmals in Form einer dreistufigen Pyramide wurden von Albert Bartholomé (1848-1928) geschaffen, während die Flachreliefs von Raoul Lamourdieu (1877-1953) angefertigt wurden. Auf den vier Seiten des Denkmals wechseln sich Widmungen und Listen mit den Namen der Opfer mit Basreliefs ab, auf denen unter anderem die berühmte Episode der Vase von Soissons aus dem Jahr 486 dargestellt ist.
