La construcción de este monumento, iniciada en 1914, pretendía inicialmente rendir homenaje a la rica historia de la ciudad de Soissons. El trágico comienzo del siglo XX decidió lo contrario: cuando se terminó en 1926, se convirtió en el monumento a los muertos en el que está inscrita una dedicatoria: "A Soissons inmortal a sus hijos caídos gloriosamente por la Patria". La estatuaria de este monumento en forma de pirámide de 3 escalones es obra de Albert Bartholomé (1848-1928), mientras que sus bajorrelieves fueron creados por Raoul Lamourdieu (1877-1953). En los cuatro lados del monumento se alternan dedicatorias y listas de nombres de víctimas con bajorrelieves en los que se representa el famoso episodio del jarrón de Soissons de 486.
