Montréal du Gers ist das älteste mittelalterliche Dorf - eine Bastide - im Gers. Es ist auch ein Ort, den zahlreiche Pilger besuchen. Der Name der Stadt, Montréal (oder „Montroyal“), erinnert an die königlichen Ursprünge dieser 1255 von Alphonse de Poitiers gegründeten Bastide. Ihr Bau auf einem Felsen auf einem Vorsprung, der das kleine Tal der Auzoue überblickt, sollte eine strategische Rolle zwischen den französischen und englischen Gebieten zur Zeit des Hundertjährigen Krieges spielen. Aus ihrer Vergangenheit bewahrt Montréal-du-Gers ein reiches Erbe mit befestigten Wohnstätten, einem Spitzbogen, Fachwerkhäusern, einem Platz, der von massiven Steingewölben umrahmt wird, und engen Straßen.
