Montréal du Gers is the oldest medieval village - a bastide - in Gers. It is also a place that many pilgrims visit. After all, it is located on the oldest and most beautiful pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The name of the town, Montréal (or "Montroyal"), recalls the royal origins of this bastide founded in 1255 by Alphonse de Poitiers. Built on a rock on a promontory overlooking the small valley of Auzoue, it was meant to play a strategic role between French and English domains during the Hundred Years' War. From its past, Montréal-du-Gers retains a rich heritage with fortified houses, a pointed arch gate, half-timbered houses, a square surrounded by massive stone arches, and narrow streets.
