Das unter der wissenschaftlichen Leitung des Paläoanthropologen Jean Louis HEIM errichtete Museum gibt in neun Interessengebieten einen Überblick über die Neandertalerzeit rund um die Rekonstruktion der Grube und des Skeletts des Neandertalers, die 1908 von Jean Bouyssonie entdeckt wurden. Zahlreiche Veranstaltungen für Erwachsene und Kinder: Café de la préhistoire und wissenschaftliche Vorträge, Grande Fête de la Préhistoire: prähistorische Buchmesse, Europameisterschaft im Schießen mit prähistorischen Waffen, Workshops und Vorführungen zum Feuersteinschleifen, Schmuckherstellung... . Pädagogische Workshops "Werde ein prähistorischer Mensch" kindgerechte Besuche mit Workshops im Juli und August
