Die Brunnen waren aufgrund der dicken Kalksteinschicht sehr kostspielig zu bauen und ermöglichten es, das Grundwasser zu erreichen. Die Brunnen wurden hauptsächlich von der Gemeindeverwaltung angelegt und regelmäßig gewartet. Im Jahr 1648 gab es 17 öffentliche Brunnen, die über das gesamte Stadtgebiet verteilt waren. Zwei dieser Brunnen wurden gleichzeitig mit dem Bau der Türme Navarre und Orval sowie des Turms Petit-Sault Anfang des 16. Die hohen Summen, die für den Bau solcher Bauwerke aufgewendet wurden, ermöglichten es auch, diese öffentlichen Einrichtungen kostengünstig zu finanzieren.
