Nach dem Krieg von 1870 und dem Friedensvertrag von Frankfurt vom 10. Mai 1871 wurden die Gebiete Elsass-Mosel deutsch. Der Norden der Mosel (Jarny und Longwy) blieb hingegen französisch. Die Grenzsteine wurden bei der Gründung des Departements Meurthe et Moselle aufgestellt. Diese Grenzsteine grenzen die verschiedenen "deutsch-französischen" Gebiete voneinander ab. In der Tat wurden einige Gemeinden deutsch. Frankreich schenkte Deutschland zwölf Gemeinden im Pays Haut mosellan.
