Dopo la guerra del 1870 e il trattato di pace di Francoforte del 10 maggio 1871, i territori dell'Alsazia-Mosella divennero tedeschi. Il nord della Mosella (Jarny e Longwy), invece, rimase francese. I segnavia di confine sono stati installati quando è stato creato il dipartimento della Meurthe et Moselle. Questi marcatori delimitano i diversi territori "franco-tedeschi". In effetti, alcuni comuni sono diventati tedeschi. La Francia ha ceduto alla Germania dodici comuni della regione della Haut Moselle.
