Im Juli 1896 führte eine in Metz stationierte deutsche Kompanie Manöver durch und baute eine Holzbrücke. Bildhauer hackten eine Gedenktafel in den Sandstein, um eine Spur ihrer Vorbeifahrt zu hinterlassen. Außerdem gruben sie eine "Kammer" in einen nahegelegenen Felsen. Konnten sie sich vorstellen, dass während des Krieges 1939/45 russische Soldaten, die in Ban Saint-Jean gefangen waren, ausbrechen und in dieser "Höhle" Zuflucht suchen würden? Die Bewohner der Gegend brachten ihnen aus Solidarität Lebensmittel.
