Die römischen Bäder haben natürliche heiße Quellen. Das Wasser, das aus dem Boden in Bath sprudelt, fiel als Regen auf die nahegelegenen Mendip Hills. Es sickert durch Kalkstein-Aquiferen bis zu einer Tiefe von 2.700 Metern (8.900 Fuß) bis 4.300 Metern (14.100 Fuß), wo geothermische Energie die Wassertemperatur auf zwischen 64 °C und 96 °C erhöht. Unter Druck steigt das erhitzte Wasser an die Oberfläche entlang von Rissen und Verwerfungen im Kalkstein.
