Los Baños Romanos tienen manantiales de agua caliente natural. El agua que brota del suelo en Bath cayó como lluvia en las cercanas Colinas de Mendip. Se filtra a través de acuíferos de piedra caliza a una profundidad de entre 2,700 metros (8,900 pies) y 4,300 metros (14,100 pies) donde la energía geotérmica eleva la temperatura del agua entre 64 °C y 96 °C. Bajo presión, el agua caliente sube a la superficie a lo largo de fisuras y fallas en la piedra caliza.
