Der Ortsname 'Heddon on the Wall' wird erstmals in den Pipe Rolls von 1175 erwähnt, wo er als Hedun erscheint. Er erscheint 1262 als Heddun und 1242 als Hedon super murum. Der Name stammt aus dem Altenglischen hæth-dūn, was 'Hügel, wo Heidekraut wuchs' bedeutet.
