Das Kernkraftwerk Dounreay liegt nahe einer verfallenen Burg in der Grafschaft Caithness im Verwaltungsbezirk Highland an der Nordküste Schottlands. Diese Burg befindet sich heute auf einem Gelände, das von der United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority und dem Verteidigungsministerium genutzt wurde. Das Gelände ist als Standort mehrerer kerntechnischer Anlagen bekannt, von denen drei der UKAEA gehörten und von dieser bis 31. März 2008 betrieben wurden. Es gibt zwei Blöcke: DFR und PFR.
