Gegründet im Jahr 1741 wurden an der Royal Military Academy Woolwich Offiziere der Royal Artillery und der Royal Engineers ausgebildet. Später erhielten auch Offiziere des Royal Corps of Signals und anderer technischer Einheiten ihre Ausbildung in Woolwich. Bei Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs 1939 wurde die Royal Military Academy Woolwich geschlossen. Ihre Aufgaben übernahm die Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
Bekannte Lehrer in Woolwich waren unter anderem Frederick Augustus Abel, Peter Barlow, Samuel Hunter Christie, Adair Crawford, Alfred George Greenhill, Percy Alexander MacMahon, Paul Sandby und James Joseph Sylvester.
