Die Ebene von Messinia ist ein Graben-System: ein geologischer Block, der im Vergleich zu den beiden Blöcken, die sich erhoben haben (Horste), abgesunken ist. Auf der Ostseite: das Taygetos-Gebirge, im Westen die kyparissischen Berge. Dieser Graben wurde mit Fluss- und Meeresablagerungen (hauptsächlich Ton) gefüllt, die die fruchtbare Ebene von Messinia bildeten. Hier fand auch der Fluss Nedon seinen Weg zwischen den Gebirgen zur Bucht von Messinia.
