La pianura di Messinia è un sistema di graben: un blocco geologico che è sceso rispetto ai due blocchi che sono saliti (horst). Sul lato est: la catena montuosa del Taygetos, a ovest le montagne di Kyparissia. Questo graben è stato riempito con depositi fluviali e marini (principalmente argilla) formando la fertile pianura di Messinia. È anche qui che il fiume Nedon ha trovato il suo corso tra le catene montuose fino al Golfo di Messinia.
