Bis zum Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts hatte Kranidi eine große Handelsflotte und etablierte Handelsrouten im gesamten Mittelmeer. Zwischen 1823 und 1824 wurde Kranidi der vorübergehende Sitz der Regierung in Griechenland und spielte eine wichtige Rolle während des Griechischen Unabhängigkeitskrieges, bevor die Hauptstadt nach Nafplio verlegt und später nach Athen transferiert wurde. Es ist auch der Geburtsort von Emmanuel Repoulis, einem Minister im Kabinett Venizelos, dem zu Ehren ein Dorffest benannt wurde. Der aktuelle Name von Kranidi wurde zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts angenommen.
