Hasta principios del siglo XX, Kranidi tenía una gran flota comercial y estableció rutas comerciales a lo largo del Mediterráneo. Entre 1823 y 1824, Kranidi se convirtió en la sede gubernamental provisional de Grecia, habiendo desempeñado un papel importante durante la Guerra de Independencia Griega, antes de que la capital se estableciera en Nafplio y luego se trasladara a Atenas. También es el lugar de nacimiento de Emmanuel Repoulis, un Ministro en el gabinete de Venizelos, que ha tenido un festival en su honor. El nombre reciente de Kranidi se adquirió a principios del siglo XVI.
