Die Tourismusgeschichte Killarneys reicht mindestens bis ins mittlere 18. Jahrhundert zurück, als Thomas, der vierte Viscount Kenmare (Lord Kenmare), begann, Besucher und neue Einwohner in die Stadt zu ziehen. Das Jahr 1747 wurde bei den jüngsten 250-Jahr-Feierlichkeiten verwendet, um die Geschichte des Tourismus in Killarney zu ehren. Ein Besuch von Königin Victoria im Jahr 1861 verschaffte der Stadt einige internationale Aufmerksamkeit. Killarney profitierte erheblich von der Ankunft der Eisenbahn im Juli 1853. Der britische Handelsverzeichnisverleger Isaac Slater bemerkte, dass es 1846 drei Hotels in der Stadt gab[16], aber bis 1854, ein Jahr nach der Ankunft der Eisenbahn, nannte James Fraser sieben Hotels und beschrieb ihre Standorte.
