L'histoire du tourisme à Killarney remonte au moins au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, lorsque Thomas, quatrième vicomte de Kenmare (Lord Kenmare), a commencé à attirer des visiteurs et de nouveaux résidents dans la ville. La date de 1747 a été utilisée lors des récentes célébrations du 250e anniversaire pour honorer l'histoire du tourisme à Killarney. Une visite de la reine Victoria en 1861 a donné une certaine visibilité internationale à la ville. Killarney a grandement bénéficié de l'arrivée du chemin de fer en juillet 1853. L'éditeur de répertoires commerciaux britanniques Isaac Slater a noté qu'il y avait trois hôtels dans la ville en 1846[16], mais qu'en 1854, un an après l'arrivée du chemin de fer, James Fraser a nommé sept hôtels et a décrit leurs emplacements.
