1682 wurde die Fassade der Kathedrale Santa Maria Maggiore abgerissen. 1805 ließ Napoleon Bonaparte die Fassade fertigstellen. In seiner Begeisterung kündigte er an, dass alle Kosten vom französischen Staat übernommen werden würden. Obwohl diese Entschädigung nie gezahlt wurde, hatte dieses Versprechen zur Folge, dass die Fassade in 7 Jahren fertiggestellt wurde. Als eine Form des Dankes wurde eine Statue von Napoleon auf der Spitze eines der Türme aufgestellt. Hier wurde Napoleon zum König von Italien gekrönt.
