Bruneck ist der Hauptort des Pustertals und mit 16.774 Einwohnern die fünftgrößte Stadt Südtirols. Sie ist Sitz der Bezirksgemeinschaft Pustertal sowie Standort mehrerer weiterführender Schulen und eines Krankenhauses.
Das Stadtgebiet nimmt große Teile der sogenannten Brunecker Weitung ein. Hier münden das von Norden kommende Tauferer Tal und – leicht südwestlich versetzt – das von Süden kommende Gadertal in das in Ost-West-Richtung verlaufende Pustertal ein. Mitsamt seinen Fraktionen und Anteilen an den umliegenden Höhen umfasst das Gemeindegebiet eine Fläche von 45,07 km².
