Die Stadt zählt 23.326 Einwohner und liegt in einem weiten Tal mitten in den Abruzzen, das von den höchsten Bergen der Apenninenkette umgeben ist. Sulmona liegt am Rand des Maiella-Nationalparkes.
In der Antike trug die Stadt den Namen Sulmo und gehörte zum Gebiet der Paeligner. Der Name könnte von sulmo = wasserreich herkommen. Bei der Integration in die Römische Republik wurde Sulmo ein Municipium. Es wurde während der Bürgerkriege durch Sulla zerstört, aber wieder aufgebaut. Aus Sulmo stammte der Dichter Ovid, der in seinen Werken mehrfach seiner Heimat gedachte . Daher kommen auch die Initialen „SMPE“ im Wappen der Stadt .
