Die Berge des Gran Sasso wurden 2011 unter Wissenschaftlern berühmt. Hier wurden 150.000 Blei-Blöcke in den Berg hinein platziert. Diese Bleiblöcke können Neutrinos einfangen. Die Neutrinos wurden vom CERN in 730 km Entfernung während des OPERA-Experiments abgefeuert. Der Abstand zwischen CERN und Gran Sasso wurde genau vorab gemessen (mit einer Genauigkeit von bis zu 20 cm). Als die Neutrinos im CERN abgefeuert wurden, wurde die Zeitdifferenz beim Eintreffen in Gran Sasso gemessen. Das Experiment kam zu dem Schluss, dass die Geschwindigkeit der Neutrinos schneller war als Licht. Und das war eine schockierende Nachricht, denn wenn das wahr ist, erschüttert es die Grundlagen der modernen Physik. Offensichtlich sind weitere Experimente nötig. Aber die Wirkung war, dass Gran Sasso ein berühmter Berg in der wissenschaftlichen Welt wurde.
