Nach dem Großen Preis von Belgien führte Mika Häkkinen die Fahrerwertung mit sechs Punkten vor Michael Schumacher und mit 13 Punkten vor David Coulthard an. McLaren-Mercedes führte in der Konstrukteurswertung mit acht Punkten vor Ferrari und mit 95 Punkten vor Williams-BMW.
