Das Herzogtum Urbino wurde nach dem Tod des letzten Herzogs Francesco Maria II. della Rovere im Jahr 1625 als Provinz dem Kirchenstaat angegliedert. Infolgedessen war der Palazzo Ducale von Pesaro im Jahr 1655 die Residenz des Kardinallegaten Luigi Homodei. Er empfing Königin Christina von Schweden während ihrer Reise nach Rom. Heute wird der Palast als Hauptrathaus genutzt.
