Die ersten Genossenschaftsbanken wurden im 19. Jahrhundert gegründet, nach dem Konzept von Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen und Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch, den Gründern der ersten ländlichen Genossenschaftskassen in Deutschland. Die ersten Kreditgenossenschaften von Raiffeisen wurden in Luxemburg im Jahr 1925 gegründet. Anfang 1926 schufen die bestehenden Kassen die „Centrale des Caisses Raiffeisen luxembourgeoises“, die seit 2001 den Namen Raiffeisenbank trägt.
