Der Platz ist seit 1930 der Dreh- und Angelpunkt zwischen der Java-Insel und der KNSM-Insel an der IJ, im östlichen Hafenbereich. Von Süden wurden diese beiden „Inseln“ durch den Verbindungsdamm mit dem Festland verbunden. Der Dreh- und Angelpunkt wurde hauptsächlich von Güterzügen genutzt, die hier ein- und ausfuhren, um die von den Reedereien angelieferten Waren abzutransportieren.
