The square has served as the pivot point between Java Island and KNSM Island at the IJ since 1930, in the Eastern Harbour Area. From the south, these two "islands" were connected to the mainland by the Connection Dam. The pivot point was mainly used by freight trains that came and went to transport goods brought in by shipping companies.
