1314 gestattete der Bischof von Utrecht den Bau einer hölzernen, dem Heiligen Pankratius geweihten Kapelle auf dem 'Hooge Land'. Diese Kapelle wurde bald durch eine einfache steinerne Kirche ersetzt, die durch das starke Wachstum Leidens aber bald wieder zu klein war. 1366 wurde die Kirche zur Stiftskirche erhoben. 1377 begannen die Arbeiten zum Bau einer neuen großen Kirche. 1391 wurde der Priesterchor, 1415 der Chorumgang fertiggestellt. Mit dem Bau der Heiligkreuzkapelle 1436 wurde ein Ansatz des Südquerhauses errichtet. Zwischen 1432 und 1456 wurden die Seitenschiffe erweitert. Durch Geldmangel des Stiftskapitels gerieten die Arbeiten zeitweise ins Stocken. Um 1500 war das Querhaus in seinen heutigen Ausmaßen fertiggestellt.
