Bereits in der römischen Zeit gab es hier eine Siedlung namens Caspingium, die an der südlichen Heerstraße (Weg für das Militär) zwischen Noviomagus (Nijmegen) und Lugdunum Batavorum (Katwijk) lag. In und um Asperen wurden zahlreiche römische Funde gemacht.
Um 1314 erhielt Asperen Stadtrechte.
Nördlich von Asperen entlang der Linge liegt der Galgenweiher. Ein Weiher ist eine tiefe Wasserfläche, die während eines Deichbruchs entstanden ist.
