Aalden bildet zusammen mit dem Nachbardorf Zweeloo fast eine Einheit, nur getrennt durch den Aelderstroom oder Westerstroom. Das Dorf selbst besteht auch aus zwei Teilen, die durch die Aelderstraße, die Durchgangsstraße, getrennt sind. Auf der einen Seite der Straße liegt Oud-Aalden, das alte Esdorf, das vollständig aus sächsischen Bauernhöfen besteht und als geschützte Dorfansicht ausgewiesen ist. Auf der anderen Seite der Straße liegen die Neubaugebiete des Dorfes.
