Aalden danner sammen med nabobyen Zweeloo næsten en helhed, kun adskilt af Aelderstroom eller Westerstroom. Landsbyen består også af to dele, adskilt af Aelderstraat, den gennemkørende vej. På den ene side af vejen ligger Oud-Aalden, den gamle eslandsby, som udelukkende består af saksiske gårde og er udnævnt som beskyttet landsbybillede. På den anden side af vejen ligger de nye boligområder i landsbyen.
