Es liegt etwa neun Kilometer nordöstlich von Leeuwarden und südwestlich von Oenkerk, in den Trijnwouden. Im Jahr 2021 zählte das Dorf 2.275 Einwohner. Zum Dorf gehört auch die Siedlung Giekerkerhoek. Ursprünglich lag das Dorf etwas westlicher als es seit dem 20. Jahrhundert liegt. Das Zentrum des Dorfes befand sich rund um die Martinuskirche. Diese Kirche aus dem 12. Jahrhundert steht an der Canterlandseweg und ist somit ein Überbleibsel des alten Dorfes. Auch die Siedlung Giekerkerhoek entstand aus den Überresten des Dorfes. Ursprünglich führte ein Weg von der Kirche zur Küsterwohnung und zu einer Schule, die in dem, was später die Siedlung wurde, standen.
