Es liegt südlich von Jislum, südöstlich von Wanswerd und nordwestlich von Oudkerk. Der Dorfkern liegt an beiden Seiten der Dokkumer Ee, der Wasserverbindung zwischen Dokkum und Leeuwarden. Im Sommer passieren etwa zwölftausend Boote das Dorf. Während einer Elfstedentocht wird Birdaard zweimal passiert. Im Jahr 2021 zählte das Dorf 1.185 Einwohner.
