Stellendam ist ein relativ junges Dorf; der Polder, in dem es liegt, wurde erst im 18. Jahrhundert trocken gelegt. Allerdings gab es um 1220 in der Nähe des heutigen Standorts von Stellendam eine Insel, Zomerland.
Der Name Stellendam stammt von "stelle", einer außerhalb des Deiches aufgeschütteten Erhöhung, die als Zufluchtsort für einen Hirten diente, der seine Schafe außerhalb des Deiches weidete.
Stellendam ist der Heimathafen einer umfangreichen Fischerflotte (± 50 Kutter).
