Das Groote Gat ist ein besonderes Naturschutzgebiet und ein kulturhistorisches Juwel in einem. Festungen, die Teil der Staats Spanischen Linien aus dem Achtzigjährigen Krieg (1568-1648) waren, sind hier noch immer sichtbar. Diese Festungen liegen in einer abwechslungsreichen Landschaft. Das Groote Gat besteht aus einer großen Kree, umgeben von Schilffeldern, Sträuchern, Hecken, Kopfbaum und nassem Grünland. Dies sorgt für eine abwechslungsreiche Landschaft, in der verschiedene seltene Brutvögel leben.
Die Kree im Groote Gat war einst Teil eines umfangreichen Kreesystems, das mit dem Zwin verbunden war. Das Groote Gat ist ein Überbleibsel des Brügger Grabens. Dieser Graben wurde zwischen 1501 und 1505 gegraben, um die Verlandung des Zwin zu verhindern, aber der beabsichtigte Effekt wurde nicht erzielt.
