Im Jahr 1778, dem Jahr der Eindeichung des Hoofdplaatpolders, lag der Deich und der damalige Hafen deutlich weiter nördlich, eigentlich in der Westerschelde. Verschiedene Deichbrüche sorgten dafür, dass der Polder innerhalb von 25 bis 30 Jahren einen erheblichen Teil seiner Fläche verlor. Hoofdplaat wurde ein Dorf hinter dem Deich, das eng mit dem Hafen verbunden war. Der Hafen selbst ging beim Bau des Westerscheldedamms zu Beginn der 70er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts verloren. Die Stakete und der Steg "Tèntenolle" (das Ende der Nolle) erinnern daran. Die Infotafeln berichten über den Hoofdplaatpolder und die Westerschelde. Durch das Fernglas sieht man manchmal Seehunde auf der "Plate" (große Sandbank).
