Der Bürgermeister von Amsterdam blickt aus seinem Arbeitszimmer auf die Zwanenburgwal. Sowohl der Maler Rembrandt lebte hier (an der Ecke der Jodenbreestraat) als auch der Maler Salomon Meijer und Karel Appel. In seiner Jugend hatte er in der Nummer 42 ein Atelier, in dem er jüdische Jungen während des Krieges untergebracht hat.
Die Zwanenburgwal lag mitten im jüdischen Viertel. An der Ecke zur Amstel ist das Denkmal für den jüdischen Widerstand zu sehen.
Andere auffällige Söhne dieser Wall sind der Architekt Michiel de Klerk und der kommunistische Führer Paul de Groot.
