Das Nordkap wird oft fälschlicherweise als der nördlichste Punkt Europas bezeichnet. Wenn man Spitzbergen außer Betracht lässt, liegt das weiter westlich auf dem Nordkapplateau gelegene Knivskjelodden, 1,5 km weiter nördlich. Der nördlichste Punkt des europäischen Festlandes ist Kinnarodden, eine Landzunge in der Nähe des weiter östlich gelegenen Mehamn. Das Nordkap selbst liegt eigentlich auf einer Insel.
