Die Stadt Molde liegt am Nordufer des Moldefjords. Haupterwerb der Einwohner ist die traditionelle Industrie, hier insbesondere die Produktion von Möbeln und Leuchten . Molde wird auch als Rosenes by, also „Stadt der Rosen“ bezeichnet, da hier auf Grund des relativ milden Klimas noch Rosen wachsen, die eigentlich weiter südlich ihre Wachstumsgrenze haben. Ebenso wachsen hier noch Kastanien, Ahorn, Linden, Eichen, Rotbuchen und Eschen. Grund für diese ungewöhnliche Vegetation ist ein Ausläufer des Golfstromes im Zusammenwirken mit der geschützten Lage am Fjord. Südlich der Stadt befindet sich ein kleiner Schärengarten mit Schäreninseln wie Bjørsetholmen und Reknesholmen.
Die Bausubstanz der Stadt ist hauptsächlich neueren Datums, da Molde 1940 als letztes Hauptquartier der norwegischen Armee zum größten Teil durch deutsche Streitkräfte zerstört worden war. Seit Gründung der Hochschule Molde im Jahre 1994 ist Molde eine Studentenstadt.
