Die ursprüngliche Kirche wurde im 12. Jahrhundert erbaut .

Die Kirche wurde am 12. Juli 1161 von Pedro Aurives und seiner Frau Gelvira Midiz dem Erzbischof von Braga João Peculiar geschenkt. Francisco Sanches wurde in dieser Kirche getauft. Die heutige Kirche wurde von Erzbischof Gaspar Bragança erbaut und ist mit der Kapelle von Coimbras verbunden. Die Schutzpatronin der Kirche ist Johanna die Täuferin und hier fanden die großen Feste von Sant Joan de Braga statt.
